Sport divers: Is rescue certification important?
Right now I'm stuck as to whether I should pursue my Deep Diving or Stress and Rescue specialty first... Given my combat diving background, I know how to rescue a stricken buddy if need be, including doing buddy breathing (on a conscious buddy) with only one regulator. But is the actual certification important?
If you plan on ever moving up the food chain, past Advanced, yup it is.It's required to become a PADI Master, Dive Master, and so on. None of the training agencies will take into account your Military experience, just as the Military wouldn't take into account a civvie cert. They'd tell you to forget what you learned, now you do it our way.
Get your deep out of the way first and go into the Rescue. If the instructor is good, that weekend of dives is going to make you think you're in Boot camp all over again. It's stressful and physical.
My opinion on Rescue is that anyone that is able, ought to do it. Having one diver on a boat rescue certified puts a lot of weight on that diver/DM. The more the merrier and the better chance at a good outcome for any situation where there's a distressed diver involved.
